Common Problems - In Ground Vinyl Liner Swimming Pools

In ground vinyl liner pools can often have leaking return lines. This common problem is due to the installation method of the in wall return fittings. The wall fitting is a two piece component which attaches through a hole in the galvanized steel wall of the pool. A pipe is then attached to the back of the return and plumbed back to the mechanical room. This point where the pipe connects to the back of the return is specifically prone to leaking. The return fitting has no choice but to remain attached to the pool wall. The pipe that connects to this fitting may be leveraged downwards over time due to migrating soil conditions.

A proper installation method to reduce the instance of leveraged fittings would be to turn the pipe ninety degrees straight downwards directly out of the return fitting. By turning the pipe downwards as opposed to straight out you will reduce the ability for shifting and settling soil to break the connection at the back of the wall.
